GO GREEN CHALLENGE
The Green Independent Schools Challenge is a friendly competition designed to encourage implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions that reduce the carbon emissions generated by Virginia's independent schools and the broader community. Schools belonging to the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) can become a certified "Green School." Many of these actions can also save your schools money.
To be recognized for the 2011 Go Green Challenge, schools must complete the online Go Green Challenge by October 15, 2011. Recognition and awards will be announced at the 2011 VAIS Annual Conference on Monday, November 14, 2011 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
As you read the Go Green Challenge criteria, you will notice there is a link for Background Material providing further explanation and examples of the criteria. Please note that many of the current examples are from other organizations. It is our intent over the next 12-18 months, to update the Background Material to mirror sustainable activities that VAIS members have implemented. So as you evaluate the Go Green criteria, begin thinking about Best Practices that your school has already implemented and can be shared with other VAIS members. Please proactively submit your Best Practice examples to Joan Fargis at joanfargis@vais.org at VAIS.
Trane and BCWH, sponsors of the Go Green Challenge, are resources that VAIS members can utilize to develop and implement sustainable strategies. Again, contact Joan Fargis for contact information for Trane and BCWH.
