STEVE MANDELL, PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT AND ADVOCATE
BIG BACK PACK

Steve Mandell founded Big Back Pack in 2017. Big Back Pack offers consulting services by way of Safety and Security Assessments, Policy Review and Development, as well as Faculty and Student Training. The group also manages the member site Mandell on Safety and Security, an on-line learning community providing education and dialogue to school leaders through a monthly subscription program. Steve spent nearly 25 years in education, most recently serving as Head of School of Pinewood Preparatory School in the Charleston, SC area. In addition to being a Head of School for ten years, Steve has held various administrative posts in independent schools including Chief Financial Officer and Guidance Director, where he created numerous programs and curriculum for student guidance, faculty professional development, and health education. Prior to his career in education, Steve also spent ten years in private industry working in the International Shipping and Logistics segment. Steve holds an M.Ed. in Leadership and Administration from the University of South Carolina and a B.A. in Legal Studies from the University of Massachusetts. He is a Certified School Safety Manager through the Institute for Safety and Health Management, an Authorized Facilitator for Darkness to Light Stewards of Children Training, and certified in the ALiCE Active Shooter Training program.

Donna has been working in the area of school safety since 1985 when she began her career with the Chesterfield County Police Department as the county’s first Child Safety Coordinator. Mrs. Michaelis assumed the responsibility of the newly legislated Center at DCJS when it was established in 2000 as a result of the Columbine tragedy. She is currently a manager within the Law Enforcement Division of DCJS overseeing Public Safety Training and the Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety.  In her role, she provides training, resources, and technical assistance to all schools, colleges and universities, and law enforcement agencies across the Commonwealth on issues related to school and campus safety and specialized law enforcement issues. Donna is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA.
