Looking for Submissions!    
The next VAIS Vision, Spring 2018 Issue, will focus on arts education. Vision is the bi-annual, digital publication addressing issues of professional interest to VAIS PK-12 educators. The deadline for article submissions is April 5.
2018 Student Festival of the Arts!    
Registration is now open for the VAIS Student Festival of the Arts on Thursday, April 12 at Fredericksburg Academy! Students in grades 8-12 will come together to celebrate the arts and learn from each other, as well as from talented faculty. Participation IS limited, so sign up soon!
ATLIS Annual Conference - April 15-18 - Crystal City!    
The Association of Technology Leaders in Independent Schools (ATLIS) will hold its annual gathering of IT and Edtech independent school leaders on April 15-18, 2018, in Crystal City. The conference theme is "Lead with Why." This convergence of independent school technology professionals is the only national conference focused solely on the independent school technology community. Happy Random Acts of Kindness Week!    
Teach kindness in the classroom!  Teachers, find free K-12 lesson plans and other great resources inspiring students to actively engage in 12 Kindness Concepts. Have a wonderful week!

A Free Online Toolkit and College Essay Challenge For High School Students (Age 16+)    
Helping high school students find their purpose. The Purpose Challenge’s free online toolkit will help your age 16+ students find his/her own unique sense of purpose—and if he writes a college essay based on what is learned from the toolkit, he can submit it for the chance to win college scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $25,000!  For more information.

The Virginia General Assembly convened Wednesday, January 10 and is in session now! And, Virginia now has a new Governor. For more information about the legislature, bills and other events, read. If you have any questions about legislation, contact Laura Godwin in the VAIS Office.

Wishing you a happy Martin Luther King Day weekend, recognizing the day - January 15 - as one of interracial and intercultural sharing. Coretta Scott King said of this day "We commemorate on this holiday the ecumenical leader and visionary who embraced the unity of all faiths in love and truth. And though we take patriotic pride that Dr. King was an American, on this holiday we must also commemorate the global leader who inspired nonviolent liberation movements around the world. Indeed, on this day, programs commemorating my husband’s birthday are being observed in more than 100 nations."

2017 Sally K. Boese Distinguished Service Award Winner Named!    
The Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) honored Irene Carney, Head of Sabot at Stony Point , with its 2017 Sally K. Boese Distinguished Service Award on Monday, November 6, 2017 at its Leading Learning Conference at the Hilton Richmond Hotel. The annual award is given in honor of Dr. Sally K. Bringing you the Apple Learning Series!  Join us to learn about Everyone Can Code, a new approach to coding that gives everyone the power to learn, write, and teach code. You'll hear about the new Swift Playgrounds app that includes lessons for beginning coders. And, you'll explore curriculum materials for middle and high school that make it easy to bring coding into your school.There are two program offerings - one in Ashland and one in Reston. Make your plans for Ashland or for Reston!

The theme for the December 2017 issue is Inclusion. If you are interested in submitting an article for this issue, please see the details and criteria for this issue. 2017 VAIS New Teacher Institute - It's a Wrap    
VAIS concluded the thirty-third year of the New Teacher Institute on Wednesday, July 26. What an enthusiastic, inquisitive and incredible group of new teachers - 29 total! Led by NTI Director, Beth Miller of St. Anne's-Belfield School, and Jason Kastrounis of Norfolk Academy, NTI Assistant Director, the program offered a wealth of resources and connections even beyond the three days.  Special thanks to Beth, Jason, and all the teachers who made the program a success!
