Are you an educator wanting to expand your own knowledge and understanding of students with learning differences? Are you looking for a place to have an engaging, open dialogue with colleagues and experts? Are you seeking more tools for use in your own educational setting? Then THIS program is for YOU!

VAIS, along with the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington (AISGW) and the Association of Independent Schools of Maryland & DC (AIMS) have collaborated on a NEW! program for June 18-19, 2018. The Summit was developed by the leaders of some of the top PK-12 independent schools who have expertise in the areas of learning differences.
Topics include: overview of learning differences; technology and how it can support and enhance diverse learning; social, emotional components of learning; specific academic areas - strategies for improving instruction; support: strategies/accommodations; and innovative teaching to support diverse learners.

Jonathan Mooney

Jonathan is a dyslexic writer, speaker, and do-gooder who did not learn to read until 12 years old.  He faced a number of low expectations growing up—was told he would flip burgers, be a high school drop out and end up in jail. Needless to say, these less than hopeful prophecies didn’t come to pass. Opposed to being a high school drop out, Jonathan became a college graduate from Brown university with an honors degree in English lit; instead of flipping burgers he ended up writing books, the first he wrote at age 23 as an undergrad. And, instead of becoming an inmate, he has become an advocate creating organizations and initiatives that help people who get the short end of the stick.

 Dr. William R. Stixrud

William R. Stixrud, Ph.D., is a clinical neuropsychologist and director of The Stixrud Group.  He is a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the Children=s National Medical Center, and he holds a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Behavioral Sciences, and Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.  Dr. Stixrud is also a frequent lecturer on topics related to neuropsychological assessment, learning and executive disorders, brain development, motivation, and the effects of stress, sleep deprivation, and technology overload on the brain.  He is a long-time practitioner of Transcendental Meditation and a rock and roll musician who plays in the bands Larry 2.0 and Close Enough.

 Rick Wormeli

This program is designed for educators (PK-12) who embrace the value of diversity in teaching and learning and want to support and serve students better in more traditional school settings. It is recommended but not required that schools send teams of administrators/teachers.
