Having Difficult Conversations (Mauricio Veláquez)
Leading from the Middle in a Rapidly Changing School World (Erin Cohn) - What particular superpowers and approaches do I bring to the table and how can I surface those in my work as a mid- level administrator?  How do teams best form, interact, collaborate, and do their work together?  How can I best navigate the subtle (and not-so-subtle) challenges of leading from the middle in my school? How might I “hack” small, innovative solutions to school problems?
Trends in Independent Schools, Generational Differences, and Growing Diversity (John Martin)

Erin Cohn,Senior Partner and Experience Designer, Leadership + Design
Erin is a senior partner with Leadership+Design.  Before joining L+D, Erin worked for six years at Vermont Academy, serving in a range of leadership positions including History Department Chair, Creator and Coordinator of the Writing and Speaking Across the Curriculum Program, and most recently, Dean of Faculty.  Erin’s work has primarily focused on developing thoughtful, healthy and intentional faculty cultures of professional growth, and helping schools to clarify and articulate core values that strengthen curriculum, pedagogy and the execution of a well-rounded educational program.  She has presented at a range of academic and professional conferences, both in the independent school world and the world of academic historians.  Before joining the faculty at Vermont Academy, Erin completed her Ph.D. in 20th century US History at the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her B.A. from Smith College.  She lives in South Londonderry, Vermont, with her partner, Corey, and their three children.  In her free time, she enjoys reading, writing, baking, tending to her vegetable garden, and snowboarding.  She and Corey are also slowly reviving an 1860s-era white clapboard Cape Cod-style house, which is a never-ending project.

John Martin, President and CEO, SIR

Search Google for "intellectually curious" and you're bound to find John W. Martin. He is one curious guy. It's no surprise that he's well-informed, thoughtful, insightful, and a natural leader. In the early 2000s, John left corporate marketing — after almost 20 years in the advertising agency business — to take over SIR from its founders.

In the years since, John has built SIR into the most well-respected research and consulting firm in the region. Clients frequently tell us they would hire no one else, now that they have benefited from engaging SIR on a project. Most of that is due to John's ability to identify the core issue and direct his band of inquisitive minds to dig hard for solutions. Clients say he's smart. His co-workers know he's kind. John is also a gifted keynote presenter (visit the Institute of Tomorrow to see) and a remarkable leader of SIR. He is on several nonprofit and community boards and, when he's not in front of a whiteboard mapping something out, he spends time making both RVA and Norfolk better places for everyone.
