Mission / Philosophy / Objectives:
MISSION:  The New Community School empowers bright, talented students who are challenged by dyslexia and related language-based learning differences. The innovative and research-based college preparatory curriculum utilizes a customized educational approach to build skills in language and math and to foster academic and personal strengths – igniting the passions and gifts of unique minds.

VISION:   The New Community School transforms lives by creating an educational environment that celebrates the gifts of dyslexia and related language-based learning differences. The School empowers minds that think differently and inspires tomorrow’s leaders and innovators.

HISTORY:  The New Community School was founded in 1974 by a group of families who recognized that the needs of dyslexic students in middle and high school were not being served by traditional schools in the Richmond area. After several years of holding classes in 2 area churches, the school moved to its current home on Hermitage Road in 1981. As the school expanded to meet the needs of more students, adjacent properties were purchased and adapted to use as school buildings, and a full gymnasium and athletic field were constructed. From the beginning, the school was founded on the belief that intelligent middle and high school students with language learning differences deserved an educational experience that helped them overcome their obstacles and build on their strengths to help them succeed.
