OUR MISSION

Tandem Friends School offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum in an environment built on Quaker values.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The essence of the “Tandem Philosophy” is captured in the school’s unofficial mottoes: “Freedom with Responsibility” and “Kindness and Wisdom.” “Freedom with Responsibility” is an ideal simple to express, but difficult in practice. Freedom in an educational setting allows for the growth of the individual in ways often unforeseen by both adults and students. This unpredictable quality is the source of much of the excitement and joy in Tandem’s approach to education. Students at Tandem Friends learn that freedom is extended in a direct relationship to responsibility. Responsible freedom is not merely permissive. We require students to consider the consequences of their actions, not just for themselves but for their fellow students, their teachers, and the school itself. “Kindness and Wisdom” reflects the Friends belief that the Inner Light of Wisdom exists within each human being. When we seek and then express that Wisdom, it is manifested as kindness towards others.

OUR OBJECTIVES
Tandem Friends School offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and an ideal teaching philosophy in an environment built on Quaker values to create a unique community of learning. We are a coeducational day school serving students in grades 5 through 12. Our students receive an education in which intellectual, ethical, artistic, and athletic ideals are pursued. We foster capable students who value a spiritual, egalitarian, kind, and creative community; thrive on independent, imaginative thought; are fully engaged in learning; and seek the best from themselves and their community.

Our community has a remarkable tradition of educating young learners to become powerful and purposeful adults. Children at Tandem Friends are honored and respected as they grow into adulthood. Providing an exemplary academic experience in a spiritual community based on Quaker values is an uplifting and sustaining mission that binds us together in a shared vision.
