SPEAKERS:

KEYNOTE: Challenging the Status Quo in A Challenging World;
Dr. Scott Poland, Professor of Psychology, NSU Florida

The pandemic, bullying, school violence, suicide, and general trauma contribute to the ever-growing mental health challenges of our K-12 students.  Poland will unpack Protecting the Mental Health of Our Youth, the US Surgeon General’s recent report, share recent research in the field, and emphasize the interrelated roles of all adults in schools. Participants will explore the protective factors for youth outlined by the World Health Organization and the student success and resiliency factors from the Carnegie Foundation in this interactive keynote.

Deep Dive Safety & Security Workshop: Leading Despite Ambiguity & Uncertainty. Ken TrumpPresident, National School Safety & Security Services
You may manage the threat and survive the crisis, but can you survive the leadership, political, and communications challenges that go along with it? This activity-driven workshop explores best practices for Pre-K-12 strategic crisis leadership and emergency risk communications associated with highly ambiguous and uncertain school safety, security, and emergency preparedness contexts. Participants in this workshop will:

  • Discover insights on the lessons learned from high-stakes school security civil litigation cases.
  • Practice integrating tabletop and premortem exercises to support a school's culture of safety.
  • Participate in modified exercises and discover key takeaways to conquer your unique school emergency preparedness challenges.
  • Identify the critical components of a crisis and how to apply a strategic focus on managing threats.
  • Apply research-based prevention and management strategies for comprehensive school safety planning.
